Shri Sammed Shikharji is a pilgrimage site in Giridih district, Jharkhand, India. It is located on Parasnath hill, the highest mountain in the state of Jharkhand. It is the most important Jain Tirtha (pilgrimage site), believed to be the place where twenty of the twenty-four Jain tirthankaras along with many other Muni’s attained Moksha.
It is lifetime ambition for every Jain to visit this place at least once in a lifetime to do Darshan of foot impression of these 20 Tirthankara.

The earliest reference to Shikharji as a Tirth (place of pilgrimage) is found in the Jnatrdharmakathah (stories of righteousness) one of the twelve agamas of Jainism. Shikharji is also mentioned in the “Parsvanatha Carita a twelfth century biography of Parsva”.
Emperor Akbar in the year 1583 AD had passed an official order granting the management of Shikharji Hill to the Jain community to prevent the slaughter of animals in the vicinity.

Location & Trekking

On NH 2, the Delhi-Kolkata highway in a section called the Grand Trunk Road. Shikharji rises to 4,429 feet (1,350 meter) making it the highest mountain in Jharkhand.

The nearest railway station is Parasnath Junction and from there it is about 16km. There are cabs available at the railway station which will directly take you to the Shikharji foothills town called Madhuben.
There are good places to stay and from there one can trek totally 27 KMs (Up & down) over 5 hills or hire a chair to go to the top of the hills.
On the top of the hill total area to be trekked is 9 Kms where we can take darshan of footprints of 20 Tirthankaras.
